New Release: NEMA 8 Hybrid Stepper Motor for Medical Equipment and Optical Instruments

We have added a NEMA 8 hybrid stepper motor to our range: a 20 mm frame size 8 motor rated at 12 V, 0.6 A with a 1.8° step angle (200 full steps per revolution), designed for medical equipment and optical instruments. A customer has completed sample validation on the part and confirmed approval — the programme has since converted into an order for 20,000 units.

Why Size 8 Is a Different Engineering Problem

Shrinking a stepper motor is not simply scaling the drawing down. At a 20 mm frame the margin between useful torque and wasted heat becomes very thin, and the application usually punishes any error in three ways:

  • Heat near the payload. In a medical instrument or an optical stage, the motor often sits centimeters from temperature-sensitive components. A motor that runs hot changes the measurement, not just its own efficiency.
  • Vibration in the optical path. Micro-vibration shows up as image blur, focus drift or reduced repeatability long before it is audible to an operator.
  • Silence. Equipment used in clinics, laboratories and imaging rooms is expected to be inaudible in normal operation — which for a stepper means careful current control and micro-stepping, not brute force.

Those constraints are why the electrical specification matters more than the frame size on paper: 12 V and 0.6 A is a current level that lets the motor hold position reliably while keeping dissipation inside what a sealed, compact housing can survive.

Main Specifications

Item Specification
Motor type NEMA 8 hybrid stepper motor (size 8, 20 mm frame)
Step angle 1.8° full step (200 steps per revolution)
Rated voltage 12 V DC
Rated current 0.6 A per phase
Typical application Medical equipment, optical instruments, laboratory and imaging devices
Mounting Standard size 8 flange pattern; shaft, lead length and connector configurable

Because micro-stepping quality drives both noise and positioning performance at this size, we recommend pairing the motor with a driver that supports at least 1/16 micro-stepping and setting current to the application's real requirement rather than the motor's maximum rating — the difference in audible noise and heat is significant.

What the Customer Validation Covered

  1. Application review. Positioning resolution, load inertia, duty cycle and the thermal environment around the motor were reviewed before the sample was specified.
  2. Sample build and measurement. Samples produced and measured against the agreed electrical and mechanical criteria before shipment.
  3. Customer bench test. The customer evaluated the motor in their own instrument, checking positioning behaviour, noise and temperature rise.
  4. Approval and volume. The sample met their expectations and the project moved to a 20,000-unit order.

Where This Motor Fits

  • Medical and laboratory instruments — sample handling, syringe and pump drives, valve actuation, scanning stages
  • Optical equipment — lens and filter positioning, focus adjustment, mirror mounts, aperture control
  • Compact automation — where a 20 mm frame replaces a larger motor and a gearbox combination
  • Battery-powered devices — 12 V operation and 0.6 A draw suit portable and cart-mounted equipment

Availability and Customisation

The NEMA 8 motor is available now for sampling and series orders. Shaft geometry, lead length and connector type can be tailored, and where the application calls for it we can supply a matched driver configuration so the motor, current setting and micro-step resolution are validated together rather than assembled from separate datasheets.

Send your instrument requirement — resolution, load, duty cycle and space envelope — and we will propose the configuration, supply samples for your own bench test, and support the programme through to volume.
